The Supreme Court of the United States started its new term in the month of October last year. To this date, the supreme court has passed various rulings related to free speech, LGBTQ rights, education loans, and other areas that have highly impacted the overall running of the nation.
Let us look over some of the important judgments and rulings that have been passed by the Supreme Court to date.
Affirmative Action
On June 29, the US Supreme Court struck down a race-conscious admissions program that was being held at Harvard and North Carolina University. This was done to restrict the affirmative action policies that have been used by these schools raising Black, Hispanic, and other underrepresented minority students. This led to the ruling that will allow abolishing the consideration of race of an applicant in American Universities.
Free Speech And LGBTQ Rights
The supreme court of the United States on June 30 passed a ruling allowing free speech regarding businesses not seeking to serve LGBTQ customers, in spite of a law that restricts discrimination of anyone based on their sexual orientation. This meant any individual had the right to indulge in a speech that went against any law they were not willing to comply with. As every citizen in the US has the right to express their opinions.
Student Loans
On June 30th, the justices at the US supreme court blocked President Biden’s plan for the cancellation of $430 billion on student loan debts. This was done to declare that no authority has the right to make economically or politically significant decisions unless consented to by Congress.
Voting Rights
The Justices in the supreme court also provided a major victory to Black voters of the state of Alabama. This was regarding the violation of a state law that restricts the occurrence of discrimination against voters based on their racial identity.
These are some of the major landmark rulings that have been passed by the US Supreme Court to date that have impacted every citizen of the United States.
