Only a week is remaining before the federal government of the United States heads to a potential shutdown. The shutdown comes due to a lack of funding. Tensions continue to rise within the Republican Party in Congress. There is no clear consensus on whether or not a stopgap funding bill will be passed.
The new fiscal year is starting. As October 1 approaches, Congress struggles to pass any of the 12 designated spending bills.
The bills are a must for funding federal agency programs. The House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy is pursuing an ambitious plan. He aims to secure the approval for four very important bills. They include the military and homeland security funding bills.
Kevin McCarthy hoped that these reasons would be enough to get support from the far-right Republicans. The support will be for a stopgap spending bill. These bills are often called continuing resolution (CR).
Some of the lawmakers want to start spending cuts that will go beyond the deal that was decided on earlier this year. These lawmakers, popularly called “holdouts,” are showing resistance to passing Republican-backed spending bills. They are also advocating for deeper cuts.
Representative Michael McCaul is the chairperson of the House Intelligence Committee. He has protested to these ceases on the blocking of the spending bills.
