Philip Postlewaite, who is a Professor at Northwestern University, has proceeded to take legal action against the university’s alleged discriminatory policies.
They are bringing about legal steps against the university, claiming age discrimination. He filed the case in a court of Chicago.
The lawsuit in question claims that despite their extensive teaching career and experience, his salary is not what his colleagues receive. The ones who have fewer years of teaching experience also happen to receive more in terms of compensation.
Postlewaite is 78. He teaches taxation law at the esteemed law school Northwestern University Pritzker School. He has been in the profession since 1981. The school has even established its very own Tax LL.M. program since 2002. The plaintiff is currently serving as its director.
The lawsuit states that Postlewaite has been getting a lower increase in his base payment since the year 2013. As compared to his colleagues who have fewer years of teaching experience, it is still low.
This year the Director’s base salary was apparently $7,000 less than that of the law school’s median.
Despite 49 years of teaching, 42 at Northwestern, Postlewaite alleges that colleagues with fewer years earn more.
He raised concerns about his pay with law dean Hari Osofsky in March 2022. However, after a review, Osofsky reportedly found no reason to adjust his salary.
The lawsuit states that this pay discrepancy is unfair and seeks resolution for Postlewaite’s allegedly inadequate salary increases compared to colleagues.
