Over the last few months or rather more than a year, Mr. Donald Trump has been the center of quite a few legal battles.
Now, the former POTUS, Mr. Donald Trump, has pleaded not guilty to charges of trying to obstruct the 2020 presidential elections. He has completely denied ever interfering with the voting rights of the citizens of the United States. He is being backed by his supporters and legal team, who, by the looks of it, are leaving no stone unturned to strongly defend him.
This particular court hearing happened in Washington before a judge named Moxila Upadhyaya. While the case continues, Trump can remain free, but he can only talk to witnesses through his lawyers.
At the hearing, Trump sat close to a Special Counsel named John “Jack” Smith, who had accused him twice before. They didn’t talk to each other much. Trump also didn’t say much, which is common in these hearings, but he made sure to say he’s not guilty instead of letting his lawyer, John Lauro, say it for him.
This is Trump’s third criminal case. There might be a fourth case filed in Georgia related to election interference. Next, there will be another hearing in Washington, and a judge named Tanya Chutkan will set a trial date on August 28.
Trump doesn’t have to be present at the hearing. The prosecutors have one week to suggest a schedule, and Trump’s legal team has another week to respond.
Trump’s lawyers want to delay the case because they think it’s more complicated than what the prosecutors say. They want time to defend him properly and think a fast trial is not fair.
A prosecutor named Thomas Windom said they have a lot of evidence and are ready to share it quickly. But he also believes that the case should follow a regular process like any other. The judge, Upadhyaya, assured everyone that the process and trial would be fair.
After the hearing, Trump talked briefly to reporters at the Washington airport and said it was a very sad day for America. He feels this is a way to target a political opponent and that it should never happen in America.
