It is a big day for the United States and Mexican law enforcement.
Officials of the US and Mexican Governments were able to carry out the transfer of Ovidio Guzman Lopez successfully.
The U.S. Department of Justice is now in custody of Lopez.
Ovidio Guzmán was one of the leading suspects in the Sinaloa drug cartel.
He ran the operations along with his brother. This is the same cartel that his father “El Chapo,” founded.
Ovidio carries murder accusations of a singer who had refused to perform at his wedding. The authorities suspect that he ordered this murder and executed it.
The Mexican authorities arrested him in January from the northern state of Sinaloa, the base of his drug operation. He has been in police custody ever since.
“This action is the most recent step in the Justice Department’s effort to attack every aspect of the cartel’s operations,” a statement from US Attorney General Merrick Garland.
“The fight against the cartels has involved incredible courage by United States law enforcement and Mexican law enforcement and military servicemembers, many of whom have given their lives in the pursuit of justice.” He said.
Mr Garland appreciated the Mexican government for helping bring Ovidio into the custody of the US government.
Very recently, El Chapo’s wife, Emma Coronel, was released from jail in the US. She has been in prison since November 2021 on drug trafficking charges.
Her husband, El Chapo, is also serving a life sentence for his activities in the drug cartel. He is currently in the supermax jail of Colorado for leading the cartel.
